Cognitive Discourse Analysis for Cognitively Supportive Visualisations
نویسنده
چکیده
How do we know what people perceive in a diagram, picture, or dynamic visual interface? What users take from a visualisation may not be the same as what designers intended by it. Cognitive Discourse Analysis (CODA) is a methodology that helps identifying the perceivers' thoughts. Users are asked to speak out lout what they're thinking; their language is transcribed, and analysed in depth. Besides the (sometimes quite revealing) content of what people are saying, the features of their language (how they say it) point to underlying conceptualisations and aspects that the speakers themselves are not necessarily aware of: their focus of attention, aspects taken for granted or perceived as new, levels of granularity, conceptual perspective, and so on. This paper provides a concise overview of the problems motivating studies using CODA, the theoretical background and key methodological steps, relevant work done using CODA, and the range of issues that can be addressed in this way.

An Analysis of Social Presence and Cognitive Presence in Discussion Forum
An increase of asynchronous online discussions in website provides much opportunity for L2 learners from different global communities to be exposed to the target language at their own pace and time. However, no research looking at the essentials of social presence and cognitive presence in creating a supportive learning environment in such a context has been done. This study investigated the pa...
متن کاملModelling discourse in contested domains: A semiotic and cognitive framework
This paper examines the representational requirements for interactive, collaborative systems intended to support sensemaking and argumentation over contested issues. We argue that a perspective supported by semiotic and cognitively oriented discourse analyses offers both theoretical insights and motivates representational requirements for the semantics of tools for contesting meaning. We introd...
متن کاملIncorporating Cognitive Linguistic Insights into Classrooms: the Case of Iranian Learners’ Acquisition of If-Clauses
Cognitive linguistics gives the most inclusive, consistent description of how language is organized, used and learned to date. Cognitive linguistics contains a great number of concepts that are useful to second language learners. If-clauses in English, on the other hand, remain intriguing for foreign language learners to struggle with, due to their intrinsic intricacies. EFL grammar books are ...
متن کاملHow Affectively-Based and Cognitively-Based Attitudes Drive Intergroup Behaviours: The Moderating Role of Affective-Cognitive Consistency
The moderating role of affective-cognitive consistency in the effects of affectively-based and cognitively-based attitudes on consummatory and instrumental behaviors was explored using two experimental studies in the intergroup context. Study 1 revealed that affectively-based attitudes were better predictors than cognitively-based attitudes regardless of affective-cognitive consistency for cons...
متن کاملThe verbalization of cognitive processes: Thinking-aloud data and retrospective reports
The present paper combines two lines of research from discourse analysis and psychology by investigating thinking-aloud data and retrospective reports related to a cognitively demanding task, namely, a variant of the well-known Traveling Salesman Problem involving navigation to a set of goals. The analysis addresses the linguistic variability emerging from a discourse-analytic comparison of thr...
